Command & Conquer: New War Mod is a free-to-use mod from YR: New War Superiors. As a custom content for the strategy classic Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge, it offers an alternate history that contests the canon ending of the vanilla version. Instead of Yuri being imprisoned in a Psychic Chamber, he was rescued in time and created a new branching timeline and a new war for everyone involved.

Built on the same engine as its base version, Command & Conquer: New War Mod features new campaign, units, and game modes. You can also try A General’s Game Mod.

Release or hunt Yuri once more

Command & Conquer: New War Mod changes the storyline from the original Yuri’s Revenge. In the vanilla version, depending on whether you’re playing as the Allies or the Soviet, Yuri meets his end in an isolated prison or in the mouth of a dinosaur, respectively. Here, Yuri escapes into Time Space and ultimately creates a separate time paradox. This premise is both feasible and curious, adding fun to the experience.

As mentioned, it adds a lot of custom units and buildings to all three factions. It further drives the idea that the mod is an original work, however, some of these units experience glitches in terms of texture and movement animation. It’s easy to miss them in the middle of the game. Additionally, it’s mostly balanced, which lends to a smooth and replayable gameplay experience, even for new players.

One severe issue with the mod, despite all the good work, is that theTime Break campaign is riddled with game-crashing bugs. For example, there’s a part of the campaign where you’re tasked with hunting for a chronosphere. Unfortunately, this game fails regardless of whether you complete it or not. The same goes for any games played on a temperate map; they mostly crash as soon as you start.

Fun, immersive, but still restrictive

For strategy players who were immersed in the war between Allied and Soviet, and saw the rise of Yuri as a third faction in the Red Alert series, the Command & Conquer: New War Mod is a promising add-on. It expands the story, features new units and buildings, and offers a new campaign to pursue this alternate timeline concept. Unfortunately, it still suffers from bugs, which drags the mod down.
